I Loved Lucy Live on Stage – and You Will Too!

I Loved Lucy Live on Stage – and You Will Too!

Last night I got to do what I’ve enjoyed doing since I was six years old: seeing a great Broadway show.

When I was only six years old, my mother brought me to see Phantom of the Opera in Boston and I was immediately hooked. Of course, I didn’t sleep for about a week with the full length mirror in my room that I expected the Phantom to walk through at any moment. But the point is – my love for the theater was born and it has grown ever since.

Showtime in Miami!

One of my friends asked me to join her for the opening night of the I Love Lucy Live on Stage show at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.

I’ve been to a few shows at the Arsht Center over the years but only once in the main theater that I had forgotten its grand splendor. The box seats and high detailed ceiling give an exquisite look to the theater. Though the theater seemed almost sold out, the layout of the Arsht Center made it very easy to get some food and drink before the show began without the hassle of the long lines.

Luuuuuuuuuuuucy!!!

Funny. Witty. On Point.

That’s exactly how I would describe this show – short and sweet.

Before the show started, some characters could be found in the mix mingling with the patrons outside in the general lounge area, as well as at their seats in the theater. They seemed to be quite confused by the show of people with “some sort of radio” contraption … aka a cell phone.

You Got Some ‘Splaining To Do

The stage was set up to give the audience a feeling of being the actual live audience for the taping of the original I Love Lucy show. And what a shock – it’s actually in color! Did you know her hair was actually THAT red? Well, now we did.

The show proceeded on with tapings of two episodes for the I Love Lucy Show – including the appropriate commercial and sponsor highlights of some brands we still know and love today: Palmolive, Chevrolet, Alka-Seltzer and Mr. Clean.

The cast of the I Love Lucy Live on Stage show was right on the money when it came to depicting the original Lucy, Ricky, Ethel and Fred characters. You could close your eyes and their voices would project the images on your mind. You could drown out all of the 21st century luxuries and feel like you were actually there in 1952 for the filming.

Fun For All

As much as it pains me to say, my girlfriend and I are both in our *gulp* thirties – and we both grew up watching all of the I Love Lucy original shows passed down from our parents and thanks to reruns on Nick at Nite. There were fans of all ages at the show – and everyone was laughing.

OK, so maybe there were a few things that went over our heads that only us and the teenager in front of us didn’t get. In fact, SOME of us still didn’t catch the Dinah Beach vs Dinah Shore joke …. even when the producer himself explained it to her. *cough*

Man: Did you ladies enjoy the show?

Us:    Absolutely. It was fabulous! Except we didn’t quite understand that joke. Does that show our age?

Man:  No, it shows your lack of age!

Us: (noticing his credentials) So, are you with the show?

Man:  I produced it.

Us:  Well… BRAVO!!!

Bravo, indeed!

I hope you all get a chance to check out this fabulous show. You will laugh at the jokes, laugh at the songs, and laugh at yourselves – I promise!
